Do the Dallas Cowboys have a future with Mike McCarthy as head coach? Well, the veteran coach wants fans to trust the process.

After their disappointing playoff exit at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys fans raised concerns about the team and their ability to improve under McCarthy. However, the 58-year-old coach is confident they can, and the massive improvements they made defensively this 2021 is proof of that.

“We're going to be better. We're going to be better just through the process. No. 1, I trust our personnel process. I think we have to give our personnel department and just what we did last year to this year. The change we had on defense from a personnel and coaching staff standpoint, that's the biggest change that I've ever been a part of, both the player and coaching,” McCarthy explained, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Mike McCarthy did acknowledge that the Cowboys won't be able to keep everyone from their 2021 roster that finished with a 12-5 record to top the NFC East, but he remains optimistic they'll be able to retool through free agency and the draft.

“To pull all that together, there's a lot of hard work and a lot of credit that goes to a number of people. I have the same confidence that we'll do that moving forward. Now, it's going to be a challenge. You can't keep everybody. But that's the era that we're in. We'll go through that and counting on another excellent draft class to go with the two that we have,” the Cowboys tactician added.

“You've got to remember, I coached the youngest team in the league for a number of years so I have great belief in draft and development. This will probably be hopefully the first year that we can have a normal offseason program. I think with that, the combination of veterans and young players that we have, I think we definitely can take a step forward.”

There were a lot of things that went wrong for the Cowboys in their Wild Card loss to the 49ers. However, the one that had McCarthy and Dak Prescott on the receiving end of a massive backlash was their playcall at the end when the QB decided to run the ball and waste time in the process.

It remains to be seen what the Cowboys will do with McCarthy, especially with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn reportedly leaving the franchise amid the coaching interests he has generated. Nonetheless, it is quite clear Dallas has some tough decisions to make as they try to bring the franchise back to its former glory.
