The Dallas Cowboys are in need of help in their secondary, but they aren't feeling pressed to address the problem in the early stages of the NFL Draft this week.
“I just think it all depends on the board,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “We try to, every year, in free agency do what we need to do to feel good about our team regardless of what we pick in the draft. I think we’ve done a good job of that. I’ve always said player acquisition is 365 days a year — it’s a lot more than just the draft so we just don’t feel the pressure to have to take a certain position early.”
Dallas lost cornerback Byron Jones to free agency last month, and its problems at safety are well documented (which explains the Cowboys consistently being named as potential suitors for New York Jets safety Jamal Adams).
Not only that, but Dallas does not have a lot of stability in its secondary for the future, as Anthony Brown represents the only notable Cowboys defensive back under contract beyond 2020.
Dallas owns the 17th overall pick in the first round, so while Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah is almost surely out of the question, the Cowboys could end up landing someone like LSU's Kristian Fulton, Florida's C.J. Henderson or Alabama's Trevon Diggs.
What we do know is that Dallas has some holes in its secondary and that it will probably pull the trigger on at least one defensive back at some point between Thursday and Saturday.
