While home field advantage is usually supposed to aid a team's chances of winning, the host teams on Thanksgiving have struggled to win. This is the third consecutive year in the NFL that the away team has won on Thanksgiving Day, per Michael David Smith of NBC Sports. The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Las Vegas Raiders, the New Orleans Saints lost to the Buffalo Bills, and the Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears.

Over the past couple of seasons, there has been statistical evidence leaning towards the idea that home field help may not be as influential as people believe. In the 2021 season, teams at home are just 80-87-1, which would be the worst in NFL history if this continued. The year before, the record was 127-128-1, displaying information that the team's playing ability could be more vital for an organization's success.

The Cowboys lost a tight match against the Raiders, 36-33. While Dallas is still atop of the NFC East with a 7-4 record, Las Vegas had a crucial win, putting them right back in the midst of a close playoff race in the AFC West. Additionally, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys were without two of their top offensive weapons in CeeDee Lamb and Amari Cooper.

The Saints lost big to the Bills, 31-6. Quarterback Taylor Siemian does not seem to be the answer after a poor performance, as New Orleans fell to 5-6. Buffalo, on the other hand, won a necessary game to put them back on top of the AFC East with the Patriots. Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw four touchdowns.

Moreover, the winless Lions lost to the Andy Dalton led Bears, 16-14. The game was close, with Jared Goff playing a relatively solid game overall, throwing for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Yet Chicago had more offensive talent and experience to push out a win, while the Lions are still looking for their first one.

The Thanksgiving trend of home teams not winning seems to be a mystery amongst the league, but the idea of home field advantage is starting to lose its value in the NFL.
