Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. made it clear earlier this offseason that the team needed to pay him or trade him, and when he made that statement he thought the team would send him packing. Harris re-joined the team on Wednesday after signing his adjusted 2019 deal, and after practice, he spoke about the offseason.
“I thought I would. I thought I was going to get traded at one time in the off-season, and it didn’t happen,” Harris told reporters following practice via 247 Sports. “God works for a reason and I’m back. I’m ready to roll.”
The Broncos made plenty of calls trying to find a trade partner for Harris, especially during the NFL Draft, but no trade partner could be found.
With no trade partner found, the Broncos decided to give $8.8 million to $12.05 million in total cash for this season. It doesn't completely fix the issue because Harris doesn't have the long-term deal that he wanted, but he did get more cash in his pocket. Harris seems happy enough with the deal and is excited to get to work.
“Definitely more satisfied for what I do on the field, definitely getting more respect around the league for what I’ve done,” he said. “That’s what it’s about. You want to feel appreciated for the work that you’ve done and the work you’re about to put in. I’m about to put in more work. That’s how I feel. You can talk about the past and what I’ve done, but I’m excited about what I’m about to do.”
It's unclear if the two sides will try to work towards a long-term deal now, but at this point, Harris is a Bronco for at least one more season.
