The Denver Broncos decided to trade veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in large part because they wanted to give more playing time to their young wideouts in Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton.
Sutton, the team’s 2018 second-round pick, has already played a significant role on team’s offense in his rookie year and “for sure” believes he’s more than capable of a much bigger role now that Thomas has moved on.
“It’s just a theme that goes all the way back to OTAs for me: showing up and giving my all every single day,” Sutton said, via Zach Pereles the team’s website. “Showing up and [making] sure I’m working on my craft to where I can be the best version of myself, because I ultimately believe that if I’m the best version of myself, I can be one of the best receivers in the league. [I’m] just coming to work every single day and [making] sure I do my job, not only for myself to move forward but for the team ultimately.”
Sutton has a modest 17 catches for 324 yards and two touchdowns through eight games this season. But those numbers figure to take a sizable bump now that he’s about to get a lot more targets during the second half of the season.
Like Sutton, the Broncos believe the young receiver is capable of taking that next step in his development. So while a playoff run seems unlikely, Sutton's progress will be something to watch
during the second half of the season.
