The Denver Broncos have released backup quarterback Chad Kelly following his arrest yesterday for criminal trespassing, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

James Palmer of NFL Network also added some more details regarding Kelly’s recent untoward behavior which led to his release:

Per sources, Prior to the arrest Kelly was involved in physical altercations with a guest at Von Miller’s party & with hired security while being escorted out of the party.

It should come as little surprise that the Broncos have decided to part ways with Kelly. He already had these types of off-field problems when he was in college, which meant he likely wouldn’t have gotten the benefit of the doubt if he were involved in a significant incident like this.

Kelly, who was Mr. Irrelevant in last year’s draft, has done well to even be in the cusp of starting in Denver despite his lowly draft status. His chances were also aided by Case Keenum’s early-season struggles.

But he squandered any chance of that happening with this latest misstep. And given his checkered history, it seems unlikely that there will be any other team that takes on the significant risk of bringing him in despite the relatively small upside.

For the Broncos, they are now left with Kevin Hogan as Keenum’s primary backup unless they decide to bring in someone else in free agency.
