As the confetti fell and the Philadelphia Eagles prepared to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in franchise history, Doug Pederson took time to share some important words with Carson Wentz.
The MVP-candidate quarterback missed the Eagles' historic playoff run after tearing his ACL near the end of the regular season, but he still played a vital role in Philly reaching this point, and he still contributed to the play-calling with a headset on during games.
Pederson wanted to make it clear to Carson that he was an integral part of the Eagles reaching the top of the football mountain. From Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk:
“I told him, ‘You’re a big, big part of why this team won this championship and won this game.’ I told him that hopefully we’ll be back in this game with him leading the way.”
While the “leading the way” part of the quote seems to indicate that Wentz will resume the starting job after he finishes recovering, Pederson wasn't ready to confirm that on Monday.
“You know what? We’re just going to enjoy this moment. I’m going to tell you right now: We’re going to enjoy it. We’re going get on this plane and go back to Philadelphia, and we’re going to celebrate with our fans back in Philly.”
Pederson added that he's happy for Foles, as well as the team as a whole, for their impressive title run.
Despite his tremendous performance on Sunday evening, it's assumed that Foles will sit behind Wentz next season, if the Eagles choose to hold onto him. The Super Bowl LII MVP still has one more year left on his contract that carries a cap hit of $7.6 million, which is a lot of money to pay a backup. After completing 28-of-43 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns to beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on the game's biggest stage, the Eagles will likely receive some intriguing offers from quarterback-hungry franchises this offseason.
