Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are heading into the 2019 NFL season looking to prove that they are playoff contenders once again. After two straight season of missing the playoffs, general manager Brian Gutekunst made it clear that he is willing to spend big to help his superstar quarterback contend for another Super Bowl win.
The offseason was busy, to say the least. Green Bay ended up signing four key pieces and they lost a few as well.
Clay Matthews and Randall Cobb have been long-tenured stars and faces of the Packers. They are no longer in town, with Matthews signing with the Los Angeles Rams and Cobb heading to the Dallas Cowboys. Green Bay spent big on safety Adrian Amos, pass rushers Preston and Za'Darius Smith, and offensive lineman Billy Turner.
In addition to Matthews and Cobb, the Packers moved on from Nick Perry. They replaced him with the No. 12 overall pick, adding Michigan pass rusher Rashan Gary.
Now, the expectations are high once again in Green Bay. The team may look different, but they made the moves necessary to win football games.
All of that being said, what are the three main concerns for the Packers entering the 2019 season?
3. How Will All the Pass Rushers Fit Together?
Mike Pettine will have his work cut out for him. The Packers have three new pass rushers in both Smith's and Gary. Figuring out how to use them alongside Kyler Fackrell isn't going to be an easy task.
It will be interesting to see what ends up happening. Green Bay has had issues on the defensive side of the football over the past few years and they are hoping their offseason moves fixed them. Only time will tell, but rushing the passer is going to be a huge part of fixing the issue.
Article Continues Below2. Can the Packers Keep Rodgers Upright?
Another major issue that the Packers have faced over the years has been protecting their franchise quarterback. Rodgers has been banged up a lot, including a broken collarbone and a knee injury. Keeping him protected is one of the biggest keys to the franchise getting back into contention.
Green Bay brought in Turner to help fix the issue and also drafted Elgton Jenkins in the second round of the draft. Health has been a problem for the Packers as well. If they can stay healthy and the new additions make an impact, Rodgers should have a lot more time to make plays than he has had in recent years.
1. Who Will Replace Randall Cobb?
Finally, the Packers saw their long-time star Randall Cobb leave in free agency. It was a tough decision to let him walk, but it was necessary. Many thought that Green Bay would either sign or draft a receiver, but they chose not to do so.
The Packers do have a lot of young receivers who are going to have to step up in Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Geronimo Allison. J'Mon Moore and Jake Kumerow could receive some playing time as well. Either way, the Packers desperately need players to step up to fill the void left by Cobb.
