The Green Bay Packers are looking to turn things around for their franchise this season. After missing the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, Aaron Rodgers and company know that they must get back on track in 2019.
While the Packers have not been very good over the past couple of years, there are big-time expectations for them heading into this season. New head coach Matt LaFleur is bringing a new approach and a revamped offense, while the franchise went out and aggressively improved their defense this offseason.
Names like Adrian Amos, Za'Darius Smith, Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage, and Preston Smith are all expected to play big roles. Green Bay also went out and signed offensive lineman Billy Turner to help keep Rodgers upright. It has been a long time since the Packers had the kind of talent on their roster that they do this year.
Everything will start this week during the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans. It may just be a preseason game, but there are some things to keep an eye on.
All of that being said, let's dive in and take a look at three things Green Bay fans should be watching this week.
3. How Do the Defensive Rookies Look?
Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage are both expected to play big-time roles for the Packers in their first season. They were drafted in the first round at No. 12 and No. 21 overall picks respectively.
Getting them reps in preseason action will be a major key for the Packers. They may not play a ton, but they are going to get some time to show what they are capable of. Green Bay fans should be excited to see them in action.
2. Dexter Williams May Be Earning A Role
Green Bay has issues at running back with Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams missing time due to hamstring problems. That has left the Packers with rookie Dexter Williams in the backfield. He is going to have a chance to earn a role this week and throughout the remainder of the preseason.
Williams seems to be an ideal fit for LaFleur's offense, but he still has to earn playing time. This is without question an amazing opportunity for the rookie. With a big performance, Williams can throw his name even deeper into the conversation for regular season playing time.
1. How Does the Team Look in LaFleur's New Offense?
We have seen some new things in training camp so far, but LaFleur is going to be calling the shots for the first time in a real game against a real team this week. He has a completely different scheme than the one Mike McCarthy has run for years in Green Bay, which could cause a bit of a learning curve.
The fans should be excited to see the new offense. Rodgers isn't going to play much, but we will get our first look at the two working together. Simply seeing the new playbook will make this week's game extremely entertaining.
