Aaron Rodgers has gone through a very intriguing offseason after leading the Green Bay Packers to a 13-3 regular season record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game last season. Despite the massive success the team had in 2019, Rodgers received a ton of criticism. Some even went so far as to say that Rodgers was in decline and that he is no longer an elite NFL quarterback.
Coming into this offseason, many believed that the Packers would do everything in their power to bring in more weapons for Rodgers to work with. It was clear last season that Green Bay needed some help at wide receiver. Surprisingly, the only move that the team made this offseason was to sign free agent receiver Devin Funchess.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Packers were expected to target a wide receiver in the first or second round. Instead, Green Bay traded up in the first round to draft Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Then, they drafted Boston College running back A.J. Dillon in the second round.
Brett Favre even came out and stated after the Love pick that Rodgers would likely finish his career outside of Green Bay. Only time will tell that story, but Rodgers' focus must remain on the present.
Even without extra help, there are areas that Rodgers must improve in 2020. Let's take a look at three of those improvements that Rodgers should focus on making.
3. Get 100 Percent On The Same Page With Matt LaFleur
Let's be honest, getting used to a brand new offensive system is never easy for an NFL quarterback. Matt LaFleur replaced Mike McCarthy as head coach of the Packers and it was clear throughout the season that Rodgers was still learning the system.
This season, Rodgers and LaFleur should be 100 percent on the same page. They had a full season and offseason to work out the kinks that the offense had last year. If Rodgers and LaFleur are on the same page, the Green Bay offense should run much smoother with fewer dry spells like they had in 2019.
2. Rodgers Must Get The Football Out Quicker
Article Continues BelowNext up, there was one clear issue that Rodgers had in 2019 that many experts took notice of. That issue was holding onto the football too long.
Time and time again, Rodgers missed open receivers due to holding onto the football. He must focus on getting the ball out quicker like he has throughout the majority of his career. Part of his issues could be a lack of trust in his wide receivers, but that cannot happen again this season.
Rodgers needs to get back to being his old self and make the right play at the right time. Holding onto the ball resulted in too many missed plays. Green Bay needs to clean those up in 2020.
1. Make His Teammates Better Around Him
Another part of Rodgers' game that was missing at times in 2019 was the leadership he has showcased and making players better around him. All superstars make their teammates better. That needs to be the case in 2020 for the Packers.
Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. Unfortunately, he has not been blessed with a great receiving corps. Davante Adams is one of the best in the league, but after him the Packers are stuck with Allen Lazard, Devin Funchess, Equanimeous St. Brown, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Reggie Begelton.
While there is some talent in the receiving depth chart, they are going to need an elite Rodgers to help them produce. If the Packers want to win a Super Bowl, Rodgers will need to throw his receivers open. That is a tall task to ask of any player, but Rodgers has done it before and he needs to do it again.
