The Green Bay Packers came into the NFL offseason with a major need at the wide receiver position. In 2019, Davante Adams was the team's leading receiver by a long shot even after missing a chunk of time due to a toe injury. Allen Lazard ended up being the team's No. 2 wide receiver, which is not going to be an ideal situation moving forward.
With free agency set to begin on Wednesday afternoon, the Packers could look to sign a receiver who can make a major impact on the offense. Brian Gutekunst, the Packers' general manager, previously acknowledged the need to focus on bringing in talent at wideout.
Thankfully, the wide receiver market has yet to go dry. There are still some weapons that would fit perfectly for the Packers. Amari Cooper re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys and A.J. Green isn't leaving the Cincinnati Bengals, but there are a ton of options on the second tier of the wide receiver market.
Aaron Rodgers is still an elite quarterback, but he isn't getting any younger. Green Bay finished the 2019 season with a 13-3 record, making it to the NFC Championship Game. If the Packers want to compete for a Super Bowl, they cannot miss out on the opportunity to sign a wide receiver who can help Rodgers and Adams out.
All of that being said, let's dive in and take a look at three wide receivers the Packers must pursue in free agency.
3. Nelson Agholor, Philadelphia Eagles
Granted, this option is not the best option. Nelson Agholor struggled with drops throughout his career, but would still be a better No. 2 option than Lazard. He could also fit in as the slot receiver that the Matt LaFleur offense was missing last season.
Agholor had a rough year in 2019 with the Eagles, catching just 39 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Back in 2018, however, Agholor caught 64 passes for 736 yards and four touchdowns.
There is no denying that Agholor has talent. Teams may shy away from him because of his struggles last season, but the Packers should give him a long look.
2. Breshad Perriman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Article Continues BelowThere is a sleeper free agent the Packers should consider pursuing. Breshad Perriman put together a big season alongside Jameis Winston in the prolific Tampa Bay offense under head coach Bruce Arians.
Perriman ended up catching 36 passes for 645 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers average out to 17.9 yards per reception. Green Bay needs more speed within their offense and it doesn't get much faster than Perriman.
At 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, Perriman has solid size to go along with his speed. Rodgers needs a receiver who can take the top off of opposing defenses and this move would do that. Green Bay and Perriman seem like a very intriguing fit.
1. Robby Anderson, New York Jets
There is one free agent who stands out head and shoulders above the rest as a perfect free agency target for the Packers. Robby Anderson is still available with free agency set to open and Green Bay should aggressively pursue him. They wanted to trade for him at the NFL trade deadline last season, but the Jets' price tag was too high.
Anderson is not a true No. 1 wideout like the Jets have been asking him to be, but as a No. 2 alongside Davante Adams he would wreak havoc on opposing defenses. In 2019 with the Jets, Anderson caught 52 passes for 779 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers would skyrocket in LaFleur's offense with Rodgers throwing him the ball.
Green Bay's offense would take a massive step forward by signing Anderson. This is the kind of move they need to make if they want to contend for a Super Bowl in 2020.
