The Green Bay Packers didn’t have the greatest season last year, going 6-9-1 and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. Despite the poor season, the Packers had a strong enough offseason to catapult them fairly high in a couple of power rankings. For CBS Sports, they did well enough to get ranked as one of the top two teams in the NFL.
According to the latest power rankings of CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco (via 247 Sports), the Packers managed to find their way to the number two overall spot. Of course, the team ranked ahead of them is the New England Patriots, who will likely stay at number one all throughout the offseason.
Here’s a look at the rest of the top five of Prisco’s power rankings:
- New England Patriots: 11-5
- Green Bay Packers: 6-9-1
- Los Angeles Rams: 13-3
- Los Angeles Chargers: 12-4
- Kansas City Chiefs: 12-4
“What they've done to their defense this spring — combined with the fact they still have Aaron Rodgers on offense — makes them the team to beat in the NFC,” said Prisco regarding his decision.
It isn’t too shocking of a choice, considering how the Packers finally dipped their feet into free agency and had a solid draft.
Still, it’s a bit hard to put the Packers above legitimately good teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, or the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s totally possible that the Packers bounce back and put together a stellar year, but until they do, most pundits and fans around the league will probably keep them pretty low on any power rankings.
