The Green Bay Packers have released running back Tra Carson, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The move likely paves the way for Dexter Williams, a sixth-round rookie from Notre Dame, to make the active roster as the No. 3 back behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.
Carson, 26, played his first two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals after going undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2016. But, he has yet to log an NFL regular season rushing attempt. In Cincinnati, he was placed on the injured reserve twice before landing on the Packers' practice squad in October of 2018.
Carson played with the Packers sparingly in 2018 before being placed on injured reserve with a rib injury. He played four games with the team in his lone season, all in a special teams capacity.

His last two games were his best, as he recorded 57 yards on 15 attempts and a touchdown in-between games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders.
But, it wasn't enough to make a set backfield in Green Bay. With his release, the Packers are poised to enter 2019 with a young unit of Jones, Jamaal Williams, and Dexter Williams to run in Matt LaFleur's offense.
