Green Bay Packers safety Josh Jones has made it clear that he wants to be traded, but Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that Jones did arrive at training camp on Wednesday, and the expectation is that Jones will be on the field for the first practice on Thursday, according to Lily Zhao of WFRV.
With the Packers signing Adrian Amos and then selecting fellow safety Darnell Savage in the first round of the draft in April, Jones obviously felt that his role was in jeopardy, hence his trade request.
Jones is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played in 13 games and made just five starts, totaling 55 tackles and a sack.
The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at North Carolina State, was originally selected by Green Bay in the second round (61st pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft, but has been a disappointment thus far.
He appeared in all 16 contests during his rookie year, making seven starts. During that time, he registered 67 tackles, a couple of sacks, an interception, and five passes defended.
The Packers' addition of both Amos and Savage was part of a defensive overhaul this offseason that also included linebackers Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith.
Green Bay ranked just 18th in the NFL in defense this past season and allowed 25 points per game, which ranked 22nd in the league.
Overall, the Packers went 6-9-1, marking the first time they had missed the playoffs in back-to-back years since 2006. Green Bay fired long-time head coach Mike McCarthy late in the season and eventually replaced him with Matt LaFleur earlier this offseason.
