The Green Bay Packers are set to kick off training camp this week and begin a new era of football. Matt LaFleur has taken over as head coach in place of Mike McCarthy and there is a lot more excitement in town than there has been over the last few years.

It has been a busy offseason for general manager Brian Gutekunst. He spent big to upgrade the defense by bringing in Preston and Za'Darius Smith, along with safety Adrian Amos. Green Bay also drafted safety Darnell Savage and pass rusher Rashan Gary.

Now, the Packers have locked up a member of last years defense in defensive end Dean Lowry. According to a report from Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the two sides have agreed on a contract extension.

Lowry was a solid piece for the Packers' defense last season. He may not be a big name, but he is an excellent piece for Green Bay on the defensive line.

In the 16 games that he played last season for the Packers, Lowry ended up recording 45 total tackles to go along with three sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and three defended passes. Those numbers show the kind of production that he is capable of putting up. He also stayed healthy and available.

At just 25 years old, Lowry is entering the prime of his career. Getting him locked up now was a smart move for Green Bay and keeps the defensive end comfortable with the franchise.

Hopefully, Lowry is able to make the leap that the Packers are expecting from him and can become an even bigger part of the new defensive scheme under defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.
