Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers suffered through back-to-back rough seasons in 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately for McCarthy, the Green Bay management team was not going to wait around any longer to make moves.

Green Bay ended up making the decision to relieve McCarthy of his coaching duties after a Week 13 loss at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Since then, they have hired Matt LaFleur to be their new head coach.

According to McCarthy in a tell-all story with ESPN's Rob Demovsky, he was surprised by the timing of his firing.

“If we missed the playoffs, I expected change might happen. But the timing surprised me. Actually it stunned me. It couldn't have been handled any worse.”

While it is perfectly understandable that McCarthy would feel blindsided, the Packers made the right decision. Things were not going well and the team was getting progressively worse from a chemistry perspective. He had completely lost the locker room.

Making the move that they made when they made it helped them finish the season well. Aaron Rodgers was able to step up and take on more of a leadership role and the team seemed to play better with each other the rest of the year.

Looking ahead at the future, the Packers are going to need to embrace a new system with LaFleur leading the way. He is a completely different kind of coach and will be a much-needed change of pace from what McCarthy brought to the table.

It won't be too long before McCarthy finds another coaching job and the way things ended with Green Bay is no longer on his mind.
