Players and illegal substances tend to be difficult topics for fans. Not seeing key players due to suspensions is a thought many fans don't like to be thinking at all. Za'Darius Smith, unfortunately, has given Green Bay Packers fans things to worry about as he was caught in a car with marijuana in his possession. Though, he was not handed a suspension.
The veteran outside linebacker is regretful about his actions and has made a public apology to his teammates, the organization and the passionate Green Bay fans who were disappointed with his actions.
“To everybody who’s watching, man, all my fans, that’s not me,” said Smith on Sunday, via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. I’m not that guy. I just want to apologize to everybody. I know tomorrow, I’ll address it to the team and apologize to the team, also. That’s all I can say about that situation.”
After signing with Green Bay in the offseason, Smith has been an important contributor to the Packers' defense in 2019. He's already made eight sacks after only eight games of football and is on track to beat his career-best tally of 8.5 last season. He has recorded 25 tackles and 15 QB hits.
While Smith was able to play in Week 9, he wasn't able to do anything to stop the Los Angeles Chargers from winning at their home stadium that was filled to the brim with Green Bay fans.
Smith was caught with marijuana with rookies Rashan Gary and Kingsley Keke in his car. According to the records, he was speeding in a 60 mph zone. After the officer on the scene noticed the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle, he detained the three and performed a search. Smith claimed possession of the marijuana found.
Smith was cited with the possession of the drug. However, it is not a criminal offense and he will not be mandated to attend court.
