Brennan Scarlett has steadily improved as a linebacker for the Houston Texans over the past couple of seasons. The team offered him a one-year extension to see if he will outperform himself yet again.

The newly minted deal will give Scarlett a good paycheck worth $3.75 million, per the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson. This is an improvement from the $2.025 million he is owed this season.

Given the Jadeveon Clowney saga happening in the moment right now, this deal can be considered as his audition for the starting outside linebacker position. If he improves his numbers once more, there's no question that Scarlett will get a much better deal next offseason.

The undrafted Stanford graduate shared that he is thankful for the trust the Texans organization has placed in him to give him an improved deal:

“I'm definitely excited,” Scarlett said recently. Really the past few years, I've been trusting the process and coming in every day to get better and control the things I can control the chips fall where they may.”

Scarlett barely got starts but was an important special teams player that the team can trust.

“Brennan has been with us for a little bit and he has played multiple positions,” Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. “He can do multiple things. I think he can and will function very well for us.”

The OLB spot is his to lose after Clowney attracted major trade interest from multiple teams. If he keeps his head down and continues to play hard, there's little to no question that the starting position will be his moving forward.
