Nick Caserio is staying put after all. Less than 48 hours after the New England Patriots filed tampering charges against them with the league office, the Houston Texans announced on Friday that they are no longer pursuing Caserio to fill the team's void at general manager.
“When we started the process to interview Nick Caserio for our EVP/GM position, we consulted the League office on numerous occasions, followed the procedures outlined in the League's rules and believed we were in full compliance,” Texans owner Bob McNair said in a statement, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. “We have now been made aware of certain terms in Nick's contract with the Patriots. Once we were made aware of these contract terms, I informed (Patriots owner Robert) Mr. Kraft that we would stop pursuing Nick.”
The Texans dismissed Brian Gaine as general manager last week. He signed a five-year deal with Houston in January 2018 following longtime general manager Rick Smith taking a leave of absence. In a statement, owner Bob McNair thanked Gaine for his service, acknowledging the awkward timing of his ouster while insisting the team came to the decision after much deliberation.

Immediately after Gaine's firing, reports surfaced that Houston had eyes for Caserio. The 43 year old has been the Patriots’ director of player personnel since 2008. His first job in an NFL front office came in 2001, when New England hired him as a personnel assistant. He’s held multiple roles in the organization since, including two on the coaching staff – first as an offensive assistant in 2002, and five years later as the team’s wide receivers coach before reverting back to the front office.
