The Houston Texans have re-signed backup quarterback AJ McCarron.

McCarron announced the exciting news on his personal Instagram, writing “Let's go! happy to be back with the squad!”

Following a standout career at Alabama, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted McCarron in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. McCarron has made 15 appearances throughout his NFL career, throwing for 1,153 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.

During his tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals, he started three games, throwing six touchdowns and only two interceptions. The 29-year-old also started for the Bengals in their 2015 playoff game, throwing a touchdown in their loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Last season, McCarron earned his first start since 2015 during the final game of the season, completing 21 of 37 passes for 225 yards and an interception. He also had four sacks and one rushing touchdown.

At the beginning of the 2019 season, Texans head coach Bill O'Brien spoke out on McCarron.

“He really comes in here and approaches every day in a very professional way,” O’Brien said. “He shows up on the days when the vets have off. He comes in with the rookies. He’s really put a lot of time into learning this offense and hopefully we can see the reward of that type of labor when we get to training camp.”

The Texans will now have three quarterbacks under contract heading into next season with Deshaun Watson, A.J. McCarron, and Alex McGough. Barring any injuries, McCarron will most likely serve a the primary backup for Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson.
