It's early on in the NFL offseason as teams prepare to reconstruct their rosters for next year. The Houston Texans are in the middle of rebuilding the team and it could take some time before they're competitive once again. However, head coach Lovie Smith believes his squad could make a run next year like the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to Around the NFL, Lovie Smith believes the Texans could make a potential Super Bowl run next year. That is an incredible amount of optimism, especially considering the state of that roster right now. Smith even provides similarities between the two teams.
“We won four games this year. The Bengals won four the year before, and this was a big year for them. We don't have to wonder — we just saw a team do it. Someone's going to make that jump. Someone always does. Why not us?” – Texans head coach Lovie Smith.
It's a good point. However, it's not like the Bengals acquired their roster in just one offseason. After several years of stacking the offense and defense, Cincinnati made a miraculous leap in production. For the Texans, they arguably have one of the worst rosters in the league and it's hard to imagine they make all of the necessary moves in one offseason.
With trade rumors building around the Texans' stars, Houston can put themselves in a great position to get back on top. Even so, it might not be enough to even make the playoffs next season. We'll see how it plays out, but Lovie Smith might want to temper expectations for this team.
The Texans can certainly improve though and could reel in a haul by trading away Brandin Cooks and Deshaun Watson. The legal issues surrounding Watson are preventing Houston from prospering, so it's a situation that must continue to be monitored. For now, look for this franchise to be busy throughout the offseason, as they'll aim to acquire as much young talent as possible.
