The AFC South has been viewed as one of the weakest divisions in football for a few years now. The Houston Texans won the division in 2019. The Tennessee Titans entered the playoffs as a wild card team and rode Derrick Henry all the way to the AFC Championship Game. Can the 7-9 Indianapolis Colts jump both teams as favorites in 2020?
Despite all of the success from a season ago, there is little reason to believe in the AFC South. We almost saw an all AFC South AFC title game when the Texans held a 24-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs, but we all know what happened next.
The Colts signed Philip Rivers this offseason. It is clear that they are going for it and after the 2020 NFL Draft, Indianapolis should be viewed as the favorite.
The Colts WILL be the favorite
Let's just take a moment to mention the Jacksonville Jaguars. They are in the AFC South but will not come close to the conversation of who is the favorite. The Texans won 10 games a season ago, but Bill O'Brien is still in charge.
After many believed that O'Brien should be fired, the Texans decided to name him the general manager. Texans' fan should have lost their mind over this one. Not only is he a poor football coach on the sideline, but he is also proving to be a worse GM. O'Brien's first move was to trade All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
Article Continues BelowThe Titans had a magical run to the AFC title game but that was a fluke of a run that happens to certain teams. Does anyone believe in Ryan Tannehill, the newest overpaid quarterback in the league, to be a franchise guy? Both Tennessee and Houston can be expected to take a step back. This leaves the Colts in prime position.
Indianapolis improved greatly at the most important position on the field. Rivers was given weapons in the draft to work with. They used the No. 34 pick on wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and No. 41 on Jonathan Taylor. These are two players that are expected to come in and start right away for the Colts. They added two impact players to go with their new veteran quarterback.
The Colts won seven games last season. Honestly, that was a high number given their quarterback situation and injuries.
In 2020, they will come in as a completely different team and that will be visible from the first game.
