New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels caught plenty of flak after backing out of his deal to become the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Needless to say, his decision did not sit well with quarterback Andrew Luck.
Luck was poised for a comeback under the direction of the “newly-acquired” McDaniels after missing the entire 2017 season with a lingering shoulder injury. Instead, he will be looking to make the coach regret reneging out of his initial agreement for years to come, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King:
McDaniels walking away from the Colts has given Luck a shot of motivational adrenaline that he didn’t have before Tuesday. Not that it’s going to make him work extra hard in rehab from his shoulder injury. But that every time the Colts play the Patriots (starting in 2018, assuming Luck is healthy enough to play), it’s going to be a mega-game for Luck. This basically is along the lines of, So you decided we weren’t good enough for you? Okay. We’ll see what happens when we meet again.
The vengeful reports out of Indianapolis certainly come as a bit of a surprise considering Luck is one of the most happy-go-lucky players in the NFL. However, there is no denying that the former No.1 overall pick is still a fierce competitor just like his peers.
Luck was considered the most promising quarterback of his generation. To think that any offensive-minded coach would pass that up for an uncertain future in New England is a bit suspect. However, it seems Luck is hoping to make McDaniels and the Patriots pay for it under his new head coach in Frank Reich.
