Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks coach Marcus Brady knows he is an outlier in the NFL, and he hopes that changes soon. Brady is one of only two minority quarterbacks coaches in the league (Jim Caldwell is the other, but he was out last year on medical leave).
“I’m aware of being the only black quarterback coach, pretty much, in the NFL,” Brady said, via Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “I’m grateful for my opportunity, but I understand that, obviously, I’ve got to have success, and hopefully it brings opportunity for others.”
There are also only two minority offensive coordinators (Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Byron Leftwich and Kansas City Chiefs' Eric Bieniemy).
Article Continues BelowThere has been a lot of talk about what the NFL can do to get more minority coaches involved, but nothing has been changed yet. Brady thinks it all comes down to developing young black coaches; the same say NFL teams develop players. If more young coaches were developed, it would open up more opportunities.
“I’m not frustrated about it, but I know it’s something that needs to be addressed,” the Colts QB coach said. “Hopefully, we’re working in that area. It’s going to be about guys getting opportunities and developing. . . .
“You’ve got to develop the young coaches, the young, black coaches. That’s where it starts. It’s where it starts for every coach. You start at the bottom, whether it’s quality control or GA, and you work your way up. You just learn.”
Until more minority coaches are hired, this is going to continue to be a talking point around the NFL.
