The Indianapolis Colts were once considered a team that could select a quarterback early in the 2020 NFL Draft, but that was before they signed Philip Rivers in free agency. With their current quarterback situation, Indianapolis won't force themselves into drafting their quarterback of the future.

“‘It's gotta be the right guy, the right fit for us, and for our staff and for our organization,' Ballard said Friday in a pre-draft media session, via the team website. ‘So I don't know when it's gonna happen: maybe this year, maybe next year, maybe two years from now. I don't know. And I'm not gonna force it — much to everybody's dismay, and it might drive everybody nuts, but I'm not gonna force that issue. When we decide to take one up that we think's going to be the future guy of this franchise, you gotta be right.'”

After missing the playoffs in 2019, the Colts had the No. 13 pick in the first round. For months, it was assumed that Indianapolis would consider taking a quarterback when they were on the clock.

Rather than take a chance on a rookie quarterback, the Colts signed Rivers early in free agency. Additionally, Indianapolis dealt the No. 13 pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for DeForest Buckner.

Besides getting a dominant interior defender, the trade for Buckner showed that the Colts are comfortable with their current quarterback room. Although that may be true, Indianapolis could still find themselves taking a quarterback in this year's draft. But don't expect the Colts to select a quarterback just to add another one to the roster or to push for a starting job beyond 2020.
