Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper is set to be a free agent after this season and going to the Indianapolis Colts would make a lot of sense. All signs are pointing towards Cooper wanting to stay with the Cowboys and the team has said before they want to keep him long term.
“I’ve approached the situation like if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Cooper said via popculture.com. “Obviously, I’m more productive here than I was in Oakland, so why would I want to change things?”
“I’ve enjoyed it a lot,” Cooper said about playing for the Cowboys. “It’s cool. [A reporter] talked about my numbers at home. It just feels good to play here, to live here. I’m happy. … I love it here. I want to be here. I just love this situation, my teammates. I just feel it’s the place for me.”
The only issue for the Cowboys and Cooper is that Dak Prescott also needs a new contract, so depending on how much he signs for, there might not be enough money left for Cooper. Even if there ends up being enough money, the team could decide they want to spend that money somewhere else instead of on Cooper.
If the team does decide to go in a different direction, the Colts need to be aggressive trying to get him to Indianapolis.
Article Continues BelowThe first reason the Colts should sign Cooper is because of the cap space they have. According to Over The Cap, the Colts currently have $42,615,988. That means the Colts could sign him and still have plenty of money to offer other free agents. They also could give Cooper a front-loaded deal which would make him cheap the last few years of his contract and keep the cap space open.
The Colts also need a true second-star receiver to put outside with T.Y. Hilton. Zach Pascal has filled in for that role catching 547 yards and five touchdowns. He is a restricted agent this offseason and if the team did bring him back, he could become the third wide receiver and that would make it an above-average receiving corps.
If the team decides to go in a different direction and not bring in Cooper there is no doubt the team needs to be aggressive and bring in someone to be their second receiver.
The Colts are missing only a couple of pieces to be a playoff team again, with a wide receiver being one of those pieces.
