The Kansas City Chiefs have a punting battle on their hands, but with the team facilities closed, Tyler Newsome and Tommy Townsend are working out together as they try to win the job. The Chiefs released Dustin Colquitt earlier this offseason after he played 238 games with the team and Newsome and Townsend are in the running to take his spot.
Newsome and Townsend have been working out with Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker and long snapper James Winchester. All the training and practices have been taped and sent to special teams coach Dave Toub for evaluation. The Chiefs coaching staff has looked closely at the workouts, but according to Toub, no one has a leg up on the other at this point.

They consistently hit over 5.0 [seconds] hang times, which is impressive. Tommy is a little more clean in his technique as far as consistency, whereas Tyler is a little more erratic. But the results are the same. They both bomb the ball.”
The training videos are a good starting point, but it's hard to pick a winner of a job just from the tape especially if the two kickers' talents are so similar. Once the Chiefs training camp rolls around, the two will be spending a lot more time together competing for the same job.
Newsome and Townsend might be building a friendship now, but the Chiefs can only have one punter, so someone is going to eventually lose out.
