Super Bowl LV will be a clash of the generations when Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday in Tampa.
Mahomes made it very clear he is part of the new school on Thursday.
The 25-year-old joked about Brady's longevity during his first Super Bowl media session, musing his first memory of Brady on the day he came into the world:
“It’s probably September 17, 1995, when I was born,” Mahomes said, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “He’s been around for a while.”
Brady sure has been around for a while. He has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league for just as long.
The six-time Super Bowl champion is competing in his 10th Super Bowl, a truly unprecedented feat speaking to just how good Brady has been throughout his career. He had another strong season in 2020, throwing for over 4,600 yards and 40 touchdowns.
Whenever the 43-year-old decides to retire, he will hand the baton to Mahomes. That is, if Mahomes has not already snatched it away.
Kansas City's star quarterback has led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game in each of his first three full seasons as a starter. Mahomes has K.C. in its second straight Super Bowl and, considering he is under contract for the next ten years, there are likely plenty more in store for the Chiefs.
There are many storylines to follow ahead of this Super Bowl showdown, but Mahomes and Brady are at the center of it all.
