Patrick Mahomes' first season as a full-time starter in the NFL was legendary, but it wasn't perfect. Though he shattered records en route to an MVP award, he ultimately found himself absent from the NFL's biggest stage: the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship.

Mahomes struggled in the first half of the eventual loss to the Patriots. However, he came storming back in the second, only to lose in crushing defeat, as the Chiefs defense could not stop New England's ground game in overtime.

The Chiefs superstar doesn't view the experience of losing in the AFC Championship as a bad one. Instead, it humbled him.

“I think the most humbling (moment) was probably that first half against the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game,” Mahomes told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington. “I just felt like we couldn’t do anything, and I felt like I was really letting the defense down. It was holding them to, I think, 10 points in that first half. I knew a lot of that was me not making the right decisions. That was kind of when I realized, hey, I gotta make sure I’m ready for everything every single game. No matter who we play, I’ve gotta prepare for it so that whenever stuff happens during games I can make adjustments quickly.”

The loss appears to have humbled Mahomes well. A year later, the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl. They will face the San Francisco 49ers in Miami on Feb. 2.
