Despite a minimum three-week timetable to return, Patrick Mahomes was a participant in the Kansas City Chiefs' practice on Wednesday. Though he was limited, it's a good sign that the 2018 MVP is beating his estimated return date.
Mahomes suffered a dislocated patella in his right knee during Thursday's win over the Denver Broncos. Coach Andy Reid is adamant that the Chiefs will not rush him back into football.
“I don't think you put a timeline on this thing,” Reid said on Monday, per ESPN. “You go off how he feels and what the doctors say and go with it. I don't think there's a set time, though. I know people want a time, but I don't think you can do that with this injury.
“When you've been around him long enough, you know that there's nothing impossible with this kid,” Reid continued. “He goes 100 miles an hour, and it's important — and he's smart this way — that he listens to the doctors and the trainers and he needs to work hard at the same time to get himself ready to go.”
Though Mahomes participated in practice, backup Matt Moore got the reps with the starters. Filling in for Mahomes last week, the veteran went 10 of 19 for 117 yards and a touchdown in the blowout win. He is expected to start on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.
While Mahomes appears to be recovering well, the Chiefs would be wise to play it as safe as possible with his injury. That's especially true considering at 5-2, they have a stronghold over the AFC West.
