Derek Carr is the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback. That is not even debatable. But that doesn't mean the Raiders can't be impressed with their backup.

Head coach Jon Gruden likes what he has seen from second-string quarterback Nathan Peterman, who has been playing very well in the preseason:

“I'm afraid to bring up Peterman's name with the media today,” said Gruden, according to Jerry McDonald of The Oakland Tribune. “He's hitting 75 percent of his passes. The ones that are incomplete are dropped. He runs, he passes, he's making audibles, he's getting better.”

Peterman is coming off of a solid performance in a preseason victory over the Green Bay Packers in which he completed 23 of his 37 passes for 210 yards and a couple of touchdowns. He also went 8-for-8 against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 15, and in the preseason opener back on Aug. 10, Peterman went 9-for-12 with 66 yards and a score.

Of course, Peterman isn't going to be supplanting Carr as the starter any time soon, but he could represent trade bait for the Raiders.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh, was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round (171st pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He played in eight games and made four starts in two years with the Bills, but the results were disastrous, as Peterman threw for just 548 yards with three touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing just 52.3 percent of his throws and posting a passer rating of 32.5.

But, he has been showing some progress in the preseason.
