Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden hadn't won an NFL game in a decade, but he finally broke the drought last night against the Cleveland Browns. Despite all the hype behind Gruden, his Raiders started off the year 0-3. They just couldn't seem to hold onto their leads. This time around, the Raiders were the ones that had to battle back. Gruden said the stretch between his last win as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008felt longer than 10 years.
“It feels like my first win in 100 years,” Gruden said to Scott Bair of NBC Sports. “It’s great to be back. I think our fans for hanging in there with us. There were a lot of ups and downs, but to get that (game-winning) field goal from our third-string kicker and our backup long snapper. I’ve never been so nervous on a 29-yard field goal in my life.”
The Raiders trailed the Browns by 14 points in the third quarter. They went on to score 20 straight to take a 34-28 lead. However, the Baker Mayfield-led Browns recovered, scoring two consecutive touchdowns. They eventually knotted the game up at 42, forcing overtime.
Jon Gruden and his Raiders marched down the field to give their kicker Matt McCrane a 29-yard field goal chance for the game. McCrane didn't disappoint, as he booted it through the uprights.
The Raiders are dead last in the AFC West right now. Next week, they'll get a chance to move up in a divisional game against the 2-2 Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs are running away with a lead right now, but the Raiders still have a fighting chance.
