The Miami Dolphins are coming off a season in which they just missed the playoffs, but they were able to improve from 5-11 to 10-6 in one season. The 2021 NFL draft could be the final pieces Miami needs to make a playoff run. The Phins hold the sixth and 18th picks in the first round of the draft, which will allow them to add even more talent to the team.
Last season Miami selected quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth pick in the draft. Tua had ups and downs throughout his rookie season but Miami has the ability to get him a weapon in the NFL draft. In free agency the Dolphins were active and most notably signed wide receiver Will Fuller. Fuller should pair nicely with Devante Parker but bringing in one more weapon could put the offense over the top. They still have positions to fill through the draft and if they make the right picks tonight, it will be a tough team to beat.
3. Dolphins take linebacker and offensive line in 2nd round
Miami holds two picks in the second round which will be vital to the team's success next season. They have many options with these picks but they need to improve at inside linebacker and offensive line. Luckily for the Dolphins, the draft is filled with great prospects at both positions. Nick Bolton and Zaven Collins are projected to go early in the second round and Miami holds the 36th pick. Either one of those linebackers would be able to make an instant impact for the team. With the 50th pick in the draft the Dolphins should be looking to give Tua protection. A offensive tackle is definitely in play after they traded away Erick Flowers, however they also need a center. Dillon Radunz or Samuel Cosmi would be good options if they deicide to go tackle as they would likely be day one starters. At center Alabama's Landon Dickerson makes a lot of sense. Tua would already have familiarity as they were teammates in college. Whatever route they decide to go, they need to bolster Tua's protection and bring in a leader on defense.
2. Dolphins take edge rusher at 18
The Dolphins are doing a lot of things right but they need to improve their pass rush. They were 13th in the NFL in pass rush according to PFF and that was without any true pass rushers. With the great scheme of head coach Brian Flores they were still able to create pressure. It will only grow better by selecting a true pass rusher with the 18th pick in the draft. Michigan edge rusher Kwity Paye would be a great fit for Miami. He has all the physical tools you could ask for in a pass rusher and under the scheme of Flores, he could grow into a star. Another option would be Jayson Oweh from Penn State. Oweh had a great pro day which seems to have boosted his stock heading into the draft. Anyway they decide to go will likely make the pass rush top 10 in the league.
1. Dolphins take wide receiver at 6
Having one of the top picks is always good and the Dolphins are in a great spot. With at least the top three teams drafting quarterbacks, Miami is in a spot to get practically anyone they want. With so many great receivers in the class they should be looking to give Tua another weapon. Whether it's Jaylen Waddle, Ja'Marr Chase, or Devonta Smith Miami needs to take one. It is rare for so many great receivers to be available and passing on them would be hard to look back on. Waddle seems to be the most likely option at the moment which would again reunite Tua with a former teammate. Miami can't go wrong with any of these guys and it will be interesting to see what they decide.
If the Dolphins are able to hit on these picks, they will be a team to fear for years.
