The Miami Dolphins are hopeful that running back Kenyan Drake will be ready for Week 1 as he recovers from a foot injury, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald.
Drake did not participate in the Dolphins' joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday, as he is currently in a walking boot. Head coach Brian Flores seems to think that Drake will be out for a while.
Given that Drake is already sharing his starting role with fellow halfback Kalen Ballage, his injury couldn't come at a worse possible time, as this now allows Ballage to pass him entirely on the depth chart.
Drake told Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com that his injury is “nothing crazy,” but if it keeps him out for an extended period and Ballage produces over the course of that time, Drake could be in serious danger of losing his job.
The 25-year-old is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played all 16 games and rushed for 535 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. In addition, he hauled in 53 receptions for 477 yards and five scores.
Drake, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by Miami in the third round (73rd pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He appeared in all 16 contests during his rookie year, totaling 179 yards and a couple of touchdowns on the ground. Then, the following season, Drake's role within the Dolphins' offense grew, as he once again participated in all 16 games and registered 644 yards and three scores as a rusher, recording 4.8 yards per attempt. He also caught 32 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown.
