Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores elected to start Jacoby Brissett over Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback for the Week 9 home matchup against the Houston Texans.

Tagovailoa was limited in practice this past week due to both rib and finger injuries. While he was active for the game, Flores still opted to go with Brissett, who finished with 244 passing yards and one passing touchdown in the key 17-9 home win.

In speaking after the game, Flores spoke about why he decided to not start Tagovailoa in Week 9, which came down to the second-year quarterback not yet being at 100 percent from the finger injury suffered against the Buffalo Bills.

“He tried to go,” Flores said. “It really just became more of how far could he throw? Would he be able to kind of make all the throws we needed him to make?

“It wasn’t enough that we felt like we could make all the throws he needed to make. There’s a lot that goes into that—amount of practice, the type of game that normally normal games get into if you get into a whatever situation. We just felt like it wasn't — look, we’re always going to do what’s in the best interest of the team, and we felt like he just wasn’t physically ready.”

The Dolphins will have a short week for Week 10, as they will host the Baltimore Ravens for a Thursday Night Football encounter. Flores is not yet ready to provide for a final declaration on Tagovailoa’s status for the game, but for now, the Dolphins passer is being ruled as day-to-day.

“Well, for Thursday it’s still day-to-day,” Flores said. “We just have to see how he is doing. It’s a quick turnaround.”

Tagovailoa has so far recorded seven passing touchdowns to go along with an 85.9 passer rating through five starts this season.
