The Miami Dolphins have signed versatile defensive back Eric Rowe to a three-year, $18 million contract extension, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. The deal features $7 million in guaranteed money.

Rowe began the season as a cornerback but moved over to safety after injuries to Reshad Jones and Bobby McCain. In the 12 games, he has played this season, he has produced solid results, logging 59 tackles and seven passes defended.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Utah, was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round (47th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games during his rookie campaign, finishing with 30 tackles, an interception and five passes defended.

The following September, the Eagles traded Rowe to the New England Patriots.

Injuries riddled Rowe throughout his entire three-year tenure with the Patriots. He appeared in just nine contests in 2016, posting 26 tackles, a pick, and eight passes defended. The following year, Rowe participated in eight games, totaling 14 tackles and a couple of passes defended, and in 2018, Rowe's on-field time diminished even further, as he played just four contests and registered 10 tackles.

The Dolphins signed Rowe to a one-year deal back in March, and he has done well with a clean bill of health.

Miami initially looked like a worst-team-of-all-time candidate earlier in the season, as they got off to an 0-7 start, but since then, the Dolphins have actually won three of their last five games, most recently upsetting Rowe's former Eagles squad by a score of 37-31 on Sunday.
