Los Angeles Chargers free agent running back Melvin Gordon has been a target for the Miami Dolphins in the past few days, but as the NFL's free agency opened on Monday, March 13, communication between the AFC East club and the Pro Bowl rusher as yet to materialize into a formal contract.

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports that “nothing [is] percolating” between the two parties.

Gordon, 26, saw his production with the Chargers drop off this past season, with his 2019 campaign only totaling 612 rushing yards on 162 carries for eight touchdowns. The former 15th-overall pick of the then–San Diego franchise held out of training camp and missed the first four games of 2019 for the Chargers, only appearing in 12 games last season.

Miami, however, is in desperate need for backfield depth as their rushing attack last season was nearly nonexistent, especially after trading Kenyan Drake to the Arizona Cardinals (who in turn franchise tagged him on Monday). Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the team in rushing yards in 2019; beyond the starting signal-caller, Mark Walton led all running backs for Dolphins in rushing yards with 201. Walton was waived after several legal issues.

Jackson also reports that the Dolphins are looking to beef up their running back corps with free agents Jordan Howard of the Philadelphia Eagles, Carlos Hyde (Houston Texans), and LeSean McCoy, last playing for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Dolphins could reunite with Lamar Miller, who signed with the Texans in 2016. Miller tore his ACL in preseason last August with Houston.
