When the Minnesota Vikings traded a fifth-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for Kaare Vedvik, they hoped he would fix the special teams issue, but it has actually made it more confusing.
Vedvik has been subpar punting, and in the Vikings last preseason game, he missed two field goals. Special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf was asked his thoughts on Vedvick's misses, and he made it very clear they are unacceptable.
“Disappointing. It’s unacceptable. He knows that. Hopefully this week we’ll get more opportunities. We plan on playing all the guys as much as we possibly can,” Maalouf said via Pro Football Talk.
Punter Matt Wile and kicker Dan Bailey both struggled early in training camp, and it forced the Vikings to make a move to bring someone in. Since Vedvik has joined the team, Wile and Bailey have been a lot more consistent and are probably the two best options on the team.
If it was a fair battle with no draft picks involved it would probably be Wile and Bailey the team would pick to stay on the team, but since the Vikings just gave up a fifth-round pick to get Vedvik, it's hard to imagine the team is going to give up on him so quickly.
Last season, the team spent a fifth-round pick on Daniel Carlson who the team cut after one bad game against the Green Bay Packers, and he has moved onto the Oakland Raiders and had success. The team doesn't want the same thing happening with Vedvik.
