For the first time in two decades, the New England Patriots need to look for a new quarterback, as Tom Brady announced on Tuesday morning that he would be playing his football elsewhere in 2020.

The Patriots could always turn to young signal-caller Jarrett Stidham, which some have surmised is exactly what New England will end up doing, but there are other options for the Pats to examine.

One such option is Teddy Bridgewater, who Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says the Patriots are considering.

Bridgewater is also being pursued by the Carolina Panthers.

The 27-year-old has spent the last couple of seasons with the New Orleans Saints, serving as the backup to Drew Brees. He was pressed into starting duty for five games in 2019 due to Brees' thumb injury and was terrific, throwing for 1,384 yards, nine touchdowns and a couple of interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 99.1.

In addition, the Saints went 5-0 in his starts.

However, Bridgewater has started just six games since 2016, so teams may be exercising caution in giving him a long-term deal.

Bridgewater, who played his collegiate football at Louisville, was originally selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (32nd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He was installed as the Vikings' starter during his rookie campaign and experienced moderate success over his first two seasons, leading Minnesota to a playoff appearance in 2015.

But, during the summer of 2016, Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury that knocked him out for all of his third year. He has been a backup ever since. Nevertheless, the Patriots appear to be in hot pursuit.
