New England Patriots fans hoping to see a Rob Gronkowski comeback should give up at this point: Gronk is dead-set on making his boyhood dreams come true and appear in the WWE.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the charismatic former tight end for the Patriots should be making an appearance on WWE SmackDown next Friday. The news was confirmed by his good friend Mojoj Rawley.

It's still unknown what kind of appearance Gronk will be making in the popular sports entertainment brand, but fans will definitely be expecting something similar to his WrestleMania 33 appearance in 2017. Given how charismatic a man he is, it's not hard to anticipate an entertaining match to happen.

It's no secret to everyone that Gronk is a big fan of professional wrestling. Since calling it quits from the NFL in 2019, New England fans have clamored for their favorite tight end to make a return to the game. However, the injuries he suffered throughout the course of his nine-year NFL career made him reconsider his long-term health and hang up his cleats early.

It does seem like it's counter-intuitive that Gronk will be headed to another physical sport as his outlet, but professional wrestling is actually safer than the NFL, injury-wise. Nobody is seriously getting hit in the head, all moves are carefully choreographed, and the spectacle is just as important as the athletic feats.

Gronk's appearance in the WWE is a sign that he will take a similar path to Ronda Rousey and not climb up through WWE NXT, the brand's “farm” system. It's understandable why Vince McMahon moved him up immediately: he'll be a human highlight reel whose personality is as big as his 6'6″ frame.

Fans are already looking forward to how Gronk's WWE career will pan out.
