The New Orleans Saints are looking to keep their winning streak going at home against the Arizona Cardinals. It appears they will have quite the decision to make regarding the status of quarterback Drew Brees.
Brees has been optimistic about his return from a thumb injury that has kept him out since Week 2. He provided a rather encouraging update ahead of the matchup with Arizona, via NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
Saints QB Drew Brees tells reporters he's ready and plans to return this week, ahead of schedule.
The prospect of Brees being ready to go is certainly a positive sign for New Orleans. The only question now is whether or not they are ready to make the switch from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Bridgewater has led the Saints to a 5-0 record in Brees' absence. His performance in recent weeks has done wonders for his status as a bonafide starting quarterback in NFL. This was especially evident after he lead a shorthanded offense to a deciding victory over the Chicago Bears and their formidable defense in Week 7.
As a result, this has left head coach Sean Payton in a rather peculiar position now that Brees insists that he is healthy enough to make his return. Although the veteran likely gives them the best chance at competing for a championship this season, New Orleans does need to start thinking about its future under center beyond the 2019 campaign.
It will undoubtedly be interesting to see which route Payton goes if Brees is ultimately cleared to play.
