The New Orleans Saints reportedly received great value in the 2019 NFL Draft, despite not being scheduled to make their first pick until No. 62 overall. Part of that was trading up in the second round to select Texas A&M center Erik McCoy.
They did so by swapping their 62nd selection, No. 202, and a second round pick next year to Miami to land the 48th overall pick.
Per 247Sports, McCoy was eleated to be starting his pro career in New Orleans.
“Burst into tears,” he said. “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for my whole life. My family, they have sacrificed a lot for me here and just to be around all of them in this moment. It was honestly the best feeling in my life.”
McCoy said having the best player at the game's most important position, as well as an offense filled with talented players at other positions, only added to his excitement.
“Drew Brees is the best quarterback in the NFL,” he said. “Have a great running back, duo of running backs. Very, very good offensive line. Terron Armstead, (I) look up to him a lot. And it’s really a winning program, a winning organization.”
The connection between McCoy and the Saints dates back to the Senior Bowl, where they were intrigued enough by the versatile prospect to attend his Pro Day. McCoy has the ability to play both center and guard in the NFL.
“I would say I’m very flexible in that aspect,” he said. “I have a lot more experience at center, but I played guard pretty much every spring I was at Texas A&M.”
