Longtime Miami Dolphins assistant head coach Darren Rizzi has been named the special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints made the official announcement today on their Twitter page, and according to their announcement, it was Sean Payton who made the final decision on the hire.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, Rizzi is one of the most respected special teams coaches in the NFL, so the Saints certainly picked a good hire for themselves.

The Dolphins, however, were unable to keep him after he interviewed for the vacant head coaching position that ultimately went to Brian Flores.

Rizzi served as the Dolphins’ special teams coach and coordinator since 2009, working for four different head coaches in Tony Sparano, Joe Philbin, Dan Campbell, and Adam Gase. In 2015, Rizzi became the assistant head coach for the team.

Flores hired Danny Crossman as his special teams coach. Crossman has spent 16 years in the NFL, serving as the special teams coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2005-09), Detroit Lions (2010-12) and Buffalo Bills (2013-18).

Rizzi, however, will be difficult to replace, because in addition to his ten-year tenure with the Dolphins, has 26 years of coaching experience overall.

The Sun-Sentinel says that this will be a great move for New Orleans, however.

“Darren Rizzi, whose special teams units have consistently been one of the best in the NFL, has shown a knack for bringing in and developing young talent at both punter, placekicker and return specialist. Over the past eight seasons, Rizzi’s units ranked first in the NFL with 11 blocked punts and second in the league with 22 total blocked kicks during that span.”
