Per Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate, the New Orleans Saints cut running back Martez Carter from the practice squad and signed quarterback J.T. Barrett.

Barret is a rookie out of Ohio State and went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft.

In 2013, Barrett was redshirted as a freshman at Ohio State. It was expected that Barrett was to be the backup for senior Braxton Miller in 2014. This plan was foiled when Miller had to be placed on injured reserved. Barrett became the starting quarterback and led Ohio to many clutch victories. Even though he was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, he ended up only being in fifth place in the voting for the prestigious award.

Ohio State went on to win their next game against Wisconsin, the 2015 Sugar Bowl against Alabama, and the 2015 CFP National Championship, infamously behind the play of backup scrambling quarterback Cardale Jones.

As a sophomore, Barrett passed for 992 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions. In 2016, he passed for 2,555 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Barrett continued to play with Ohio State for his final season of eligibility in 2017. As a senior, he passed for 3,053 yards, 35 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

The Saints are 11-2 on the season and rank first in the NFC South Division under the helm of head coach Sean Payton. The Saints average 34.4 points per game, which ranks 2nd in the NFL. They allow 21.8 points per game, which ranks 11th in the NFL.

Barrett will be backing-up 39-year-old superstar quarterback Drew Brees. As a serious candidate for NFL MVP, Brees has thrown for 3,463 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Teddy Bridgewater are also on the roster.

The Saints will play the Panthers next in Charlotte this Monday night.
