The New Orleans Saints opted to place a first-round restricted free agent tender on quarterback Taysom Hill in order to keep him around for the 2020 NFL season. However, it appears he is in no rush to sign the one-year, $4.7 million deal.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Hill still has yet to sign his contract:
Per a league source, Hill doesn’t plan to sign the one-year contract any time soon. He will, however, participate in the team’s virtual offseason program.
Hill has been deemed as the successor to Saints quarterback Drew Brees under center for the long-term future. Of course, it remains to be seen when exactly that will come to fruition given the speculation surrounding Brees' looming retirement.
Although he may be looking for something more set in stone before putting pen to paper, there is not very many courses of action for Hill to take other than to seek a trade or potentially sit out. The fact that Hill still intends to proceed with the virtual offseason program shows that he is all in on the Saints' preparations for next season.
The Saints carry the same high expectations they have had for the last three seasons, even probably more after adding another piece to their high-powered offense in wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. It is safe to assume that Taysom Hill may also see his role increase as the future franchise quarterback.
For now, he appears to still be doing what he can to keep his options open.
