The New Orleans Saints have secured the top overall seed in the NFC playoff picture and have guaranteed themselves home-field advantage on the road to the Super Bowl.

With that all settled in, the Saints have elected to sit star quarterback Drew Brees for the season finale against the Carolina Panthers and start backup Teddy Bridgewater.

This will be Bridgewater's first start since the Wild Card round for the 2015 season with the Minnesota Vikings against the Seattle Seahawks. Following that point, his career went a bit off track as he suffered a serious knee injury that ensuing summer that forced him to miss the entire 2016 and returned to the fold as the backup to Case Keenum late in the 2017 campaign.

Bridgewater had then inked a one-year deal to join the New York Jets last offseason before being traded during the preseason to the Saints. He has made four appearances this year and has thrown just one pass that was incomplete. He hasn't had any real playing time behind Brees, as he has solely serviced as the emergency starter in case Brees suffers any type of injury.

He will now get his opportunity to showcase what he has to offer on the field at this point of his career. Bridgewater is on track to become a free agent where he's sure to attract plenty of attention on the open market. This is simply a chance for him to boost his stock ahead of that in order to cash in next March.
