The New Orleans Saints are negotiating with quarterback Jameis Winston to make him stay with the team, per Dianna Russini of ESPN. It is not implied though that Winston will be the starter in chooses to sign with the Saints, as there will still be competition for the position during camp.
The 2015 number one overall pick played in a backup role with New Orleans last year behind Drew Brees and Taysom Hill. The former has just announced his retirement, while the latter does not play quarterback in a full-time capacity.
Winston saw the field for a total of four games all coming from the bench. In that small sample size, he completed seven of his 11 passes. If the Saints are deeply interested in Winston, then they must have seen enough solid performances behind the scenes and during practices. He has had the opportunity to learn from Brees and get acclimated to head coach Sean Payton's offense. Winston provides continuity to a team that has just lost the face of its franchise, since the 2000s.
Fortunately, for whoever will be the starting quarterback next season, the team has remained relatively intact on both sides of the football. New Orleans still has one of the better offensive lines in the league with elite tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk. There will be no shortage of weapons as versatile weapon Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Michael Thomas will be present.
Brees' play has been steadily declining, but it is still going to be an enormous task replacing him.
