The New York Jets have publicly stated a desire to sign safety Marcus Maye to a new contract, but it appears negotiations have gone into the toilet as the July 15 deadline approaches. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says the Jets didn't respond to Maye's latest proposal, leading to that being pulled off the table and an expectation that there will be no agreement.
In fact, Rapoport says negotiations went south even before the franchise tag deadline when the Jets offered Maye a deal with “an APY of 20% below even the tag amount for 2021.” Here are more details on the situation:
Source adds: Negotiations went south weeks before the tag deadline when the #Jets offered Maye a deal that had an APY about 20% below even the tag amount for 2021. Maye turned down NYJ's offer & had significantly more in APY and guarantees from multiple teams heading into FA. https://t.co/8vkKkdObiy

New York placed the $10.6 million franchise tag on Maye, who has played in all 16 games for the franchise in three of four seasons. The Jets drafted the safety with the 39th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Florida.
Article Continues BelowIt now looks like Maye will play out the 2021 NFL season on that tag. Given the nature of these negotiations, it certainly wouldn't surprise anybody if he goes elsewhere.
Maye racked up 88 combined tackles in 2020 to go along with two interceptions and two sacks. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old was part of an awful Jets defensive unit that ranked toward the bottom of the NFL in passing yards allowed and points allowed. It certainly didn't help that the offense was a complete dumpster fire, which put a lot of pressure on the defense.
New York went 2-14 under former head coach Adam Gase, with defensive mastermind Robert Saleh now taking over the team and Zach Wilson the new quarterback of the future.
