McCarthy served as the head coach for the Packers for 13 seasons before getting fired last month. During his tenure with the Packers, he helped the team win a Super Bowl (in 2010) and led the team to the playoffs nine times. Overall, his record was pretty remarkable, going 125-77-2.
However, the Packers fired McCarthy after they went 4-7-1 to start this season. According to some reports, McCarthy frequently butted heads with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and it was this tension — and not the bad season — that led to the Packers terminating McCarthy.
Article Continues BelowThe New York Jets, meanwhile, are hoping that their incoming head coach can develop their young quarterback, Sam Darnold. This would make Mike McCarthy the perfect person to be the head coach, since in his previous role as head coach, he helped both Rodgers and Brett Favre.
However, according to Jets CEO Christopher Johnson, previous head coaching experience would be a “plus,” but not entirely necessary. The Jets' previous head coaches held their position for the first time, so Mike McCarthy would be an outlier for the team.
If the Jets are hoping to hire Mike McCarthy, however, they'd better move quickly, as he's allegedly being considered for other head coaching positions, as well (even though this interview with the Jets is, as of this writing, his first known interview since being fired from the Packers).
