The New York Jets are working out running back Bilal Powell on Friday, according to Brian Costello of The New York Post.
Powell spent the 2018 campaign with the Jets, playing in seven games before succumbing to a neck injury that ended his season. During the time he was on the field, he rushed for 343 yards while averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Louisville, was originally selected by New York in the fourth round (126th pick overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft.
He appeared in just two contests during his rookie year, but the following season, Powell's role with the Jets grew, as he participated in 14 games and finished with 437 yards and four touchdowns.
Then, in 2013, Powell's workload increased, as he totaled 697 yards and one rushing score. In addition, he hauled in 36 receptions for 272 yards. He then took a step back in 2014, registering 141 yards on the ground, and in 2015, he primarily served as a receiving threat out of the backfield, catching 47 passes for 388 yards and a couple of touchdowns while tallying 313 yards and a score as a rusher.
Powell then went on to have the most productive season of his NFL career in 2016, logging 722 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while snaring 58 balls for 388 yards and a pair of scores.
The Lakeland, Fl. native then featured mainly as a rusher in 2017, recording 772 yards and a career-high five rushing touchdowns.
The Jets are coming off of a season in which they won just four games. They have not made the playoffs since the 2010 campaign.
